As we get older, everyday tasks around the home can sometimes become more difficult. The good news is that getting a little extra help doesn't necessarily mean giving up your independence. In-home support is designed to help people continue living safely and comfortably in their own homes and remain connected to their community.

What kind of help is available?

Depending on your individual needs and funding, in-home support may include help with:

• Cleaning and other household tasks
• Showering, dressing and personal care
• Transport to appointments or shopping
• Social outings and community activities
• Meal preparation and support
• Gardening and basic home maintenance
• Respite and support for family carers

Where do I start?

For many seniors, the first step is contacting My Aged Care to discuss your circumstances and arrange an assessment. An assessment helps determine what support you may be eligible to receive.

If you've already been assessed and have received paperwork or a referral from My Aged Care, you can then start looking for providers that service your local area.

Choosing a local provider

When speaking with a provider, don't be afraid to ask questions. You may want to ask whether they currently have capacity, what areas they service, what their fees are, whether you can have regular support workers and how flexible services can be when your needs change.

Having support at home isn't about taking away independence. For many people, it's actually what allows them to maintain their independence for longer.
